The study published by DG Energy, examines potential role, costs and benefits on the use of gas produced from organic waste as an energy source in Europe. Biogas can be a flexible and sustainable alternative source of energy used mainly for renewable electricity production, heat production, and transport fuels. In 2014, 14.9 million tonnes of oil equivalent of biogas was produced in the EU, which represented about 7.6% of all primary renewable energy production in the EU.
The study underlines the necessity of creating a long – term policy framework and a stable investment framework for the development of biogas sector in EU.
