The 17th of December, an agreement was reached between the Council and the European Parliament, with MEP Simona Bonafè (S&D) as a negotiator, ensuring that the Waste Package proposed by the European Commission will be supported by the Member States (MS). The Waste Package, which contains four legislative proposals, belongs to the Circular economy package submitted by the European Commission on 3d of December 2015.
The Waste Package introduces minimum thresholds for recycling municipal waste (65%) and plastic packaging (55%) by 2030, as well as reduce landfill to a maximum of 10% by 2035 (established for the first time). These measures will contribute in reducing waste generation, control waste management and boost the circular economy. Besides this, an important achievement has been made, as mentioned by MEP Bonafè, in the simplification and improvement of definitions and harmonised calculation methods for recycling rates.
