At the beginning of June, the European Commission presented its proposals for the future of the CAP (common agricultural policy) and EU food and farming system. For the next multiannual financial framework, going from 2021-2027, the Commission proposed a reduction of around 5% for CAP funding. The proposals are based on 9 objectives, with an increased focus on environment and climate. In particular, the renewed CAP aims at supporting more small and medium-sized family farms, promoting higher environmental and sustainable standards in agriculture, and encouraging the development of rural societies. Furthermore, the Commission suggested a more flexible system, to avoid the “one-size-fits-all” approach, and giving more freedom to EU member States on the way to meet the common goals set at European level.
