BIOENERGY for Sustainable Development and International Competitiveness
Growing concerns about fossil fuel dependence, climate change and agricultural development have intensified interest in bioenergy from sugar cane and other crops. Sub-Saharan Africa is a vast region with tremendous biomass potential but is also characterized by severe poverty and high dependence on subsistence agriculture. The selective exploitation of highly productive biomass sources such as sugar cane for bio-based energy and materials can support a more dynamic and competitive economy while improving energy access and food security.
This book considers the whole chain of production and markets in showing the significant role that sugar cane could play as a renewable resource for African development and outlines the need for investment, technology transfer and international cooperation.
