The year 2018 will be essential to settle the European laws for energy and environment policies. Regarding the policies on renewable energy, energy efficiency and governance, the EP and the Council have already reached their positions. However, the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) could take a longer time than expected in its development as its rapporteur, Adam Gierek (S&D), resigned due to a lack of support from his colleagues.
The EED was presented by the European Commission on 30 November 2016, as part of Clean Energy Package, and will be voted by the MEPs during the Strasbourg plenary session later this month (January 2018). On Tuesday 28th of November 2017, the MEPs of the Industry and Energy Committee (ITRE) agreed on the target to reduce energy consumption by 40% by 2030 at EU level (Energy Efficiency Directive, amending Directive 2012/27/EU) in comparison with the 30% proposed by the European Commission.
