Michael Gove, Britain’s Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced that UK farmers will receive subsidies from the government of the same amount they’re currently receiving from the EU Common Agricultural Policy (€3.37 billion) for a number of years (probably 5 years) after Brexit, until a new environmental protection subsidies system is implemented.
Regarding the payments to farmers, a 75% of the total will be made through direct payments, and this Basic Payment Scheme will be coordinated with the British government.
As said by the Secretary: “guaranteed income should provide time for farmers to change their business model if necessary, help to make the investment necessary for any adjustments and prepare for the future”.
